Composition & Orchestration
Formal music training for me started at the age of six and my first public appearance as a musician happened a year later. Shortly after starting with the piano, I picked up the violin and immediately developed a great love of the string family. My studies as composer started at age thirteen when I left school to enroll privately at the local conservatory.
As a violinist I have studied under Esme Koornhof & Piet Koornhof of the Potchefstroom Konservatorium, Anette Wehnert of the Kölner Konservatorium, and Antoinette Lohman of the Utrecht Conservatorium.
As a composer, I spent many years as an apprentice with Hannes Taljaard. I did however also receive tuition and attend masterclasses with South African composer Martin Watt, American composer / pianist Evan Mack, and London-based composer Robert Fokkens.
During these formative years I gathered much experience performing with chamber ensembles and symphony orchestras – I played my first paying gig when I was fourteen. One of the highlights for me has to be the opportunity I had to perform with the international baroque ensemble Fons Partita, recording Handel Chandos Anthems, the first historically informed performance of these works in South Africa. In 2006 I became principle 2nd violinist of the North West Youth Orchestra. In 2007 I became co-concertmaster, and in 2008 I served as its concertmaster, performing very successful concerts in the UK, Holland, Germany and France. In 2009 I was fortunate enough to be offered the seat of concertmaster for the newly formed PUK Symphony Orchestra and led it in its very first concert season. During this time I also worked as orchestrator for this orchestra and numerous other ensembles in the local area, arranging everything from full symphonic scores to intimate chamber music for corporate and private events.
